The Power of Calm in Leadership

A calm mind is your greatest tool. It helps you process emotions, support others, and lead with clarity and impact. More than any skill or expertise, the ability to access focus and composure sets great leaders apart. Your mindset affects your decisions, relationships, and overall effectiveness.

This isn’t about being perfect. You’re human. But recognizing when your mind is working against you—and knowing how to shift—is a game changer.

Start here:

  1. Recognize the difference. When is your mind clear and focused? When is it scattered or negative?

  2. Reset your brain. Try the practice below.

Once your mind is calm, you can gather the information, the people and the capacity you need to determine what’s most important and how best to move in that direction.

A calm, focused mind isn’t just a benefit—it’s a leadership necessity.

Practice: Calm Your Mind in 2 Minutes

This simple yet powerful practice can help you access calm, clear focus whenever you need it most:

  1. Set a timer for 2 minutes.

  2. Choose a sensation to focus on—it could be:

    • Sight: Focus on an object (your palm, a flower, something on your desk) and notice its colors, shapes, textures, light/shadows, and edges.

    • Hearing: Close your eyes and listen to the sounds around you. Count how many different sounds you can hear during these two minutes.

    • Touch/Taste: Eat or drink something with your eyes closed, paying attention to its taste, temperature, texture, and the sensation of chewing and swallowing.

    • Breath: Close your eyes and focus on the sensations of your breath—how it moves through your body, the sound of your inhalation and exhalation, the temperature of the air entering and exiting your nose.

  3. Practice this a few times each day, especially when you’re feeling stressed. Over time, you'll notice a positive shift in your mood and mental clarity.

I’d love to hear how this practice works for you. Which sensation do you find most calming?
